Choice aid sailing holiday
Forms of sailing holidays from Gouvia marina on Corfu.
If you are considering a sailing holiday from Gouvia marina on Corfu, there are many options. Let’s get them straight for you:
Mono-hull sailing yacht or catamaran hire
The pros and cons
– On a monohull you experience more the feeling of the wind in the sails
– For a monohull there is usually still room in busy harbours, with a catamaran on the other hand you will often have to anchor outside
– The rent and port fees are often a lot higher for catamarans
– The catamarans offer a lot of space while the space on a monohull is limited.
Rent a boat / sailing yacht and skipper it yourselves – This is also called bareboat sailing.
Sailing around Corfu, also known as the Ionian region, is fairly simple. The big difference with sailing in the UK lies in the way of mooring and of course in the weather! The mooring is done in a completely different way, namely with the stern to the quay. The anchor captures the bow. This method has the advantage that all docked sailing yachts are directly on the quay side and have privacy. A disadvantage is that you have to be sure that the anchor is good and you do not notice in the middle of the night that the boat collides with the quay, with all the damage and stress on board. If you are confident that y you have enough sailing and more experience this is the best choice for your sailing holiday. If you have sufficient sailing skills but not yet much experience with mooring or anchoring in Greece, consider the half a day course anchoring and mooring.
Sailing with a sailing instructor on board.
This can be done during, for example, one day, a three-day or a 6-day sailing course.
-
Anchoring and mooring one day course
We teach this course from Gouvia Marina on Corfu. Follow this course / training if you do not yet have enough anchor and more skills and want to rent/skipper a sailing yacht yourself during your sailing holiday. This course is best done with your entire crew so that they too know what to do if there is to be anchored or docked. After this course you can moor and anchor confidently with the rest of the crew, nothing is as annoying as your sailing day is ruined by stress on board and you can not enjoy your night’s sleep on board.
-
A 3-day sailing course
If you have sailing experience but do not have enough confidence to go sailing independently with your crew for one or a few weeks, this course is the best choice. During this three-day course, in addition to mooring and anchoring in Greece, you will also get to know the sailing yacht well and the Dutch CWO certified sailing instructor will teach you all the sailing skills to enjoy your sailing holiday in a relaxed way for the rest of your sailing holiday. The instructor gets off halfway somewhere to get back to Corfu.
-
A six-day sailing course
If you want to learn to sail but prefer not to sail in the uncertain Dutch climate, choose this course. During this course you will learn to sail a sailing yacht independently as a skipper. Your entire crew can participate in this course and in the meantime enjoy a wonderful sailing holiday.
Flotilla sailing
Flotilla sailing is independent sailing (if you like with a skipper on board) in a group with other sailing yachts accompanied by flotilla guidance. Every morning the destination is passed on with all crews and on arrival the flotling guidance is ready to assist you in anchoring and mooring. It is customary for the entire flotje to eat together in the evening in the restaurant selected by the flotling pipe. Some drawbacks of flotling sailing are:
- The route is fixed and limited.
- You are expected to be in the next port for a certain amount of time. Often this is already around 5 o’clock in the afternoon, this while in the Ionian sailing area it doesn’t blow until the afternoon and you can sail.
- The flotilla yachts are generally limited equipped. Among other things, the battery capacity is often not enough to leave the refrigerator on all day.
- Not everyone likes to spend the evening together with the entire flotje.
Sailing with a skipper on board
The skipper knows the ship and the sailing area very well. Based on your wishes, the route and time format will be determined. You can choose to let the skipper sail the yacht or at the times when you want, under the watchful eye of the skipper, operate the rudder or sails yourself. With us, the skipper also takes care of all kinds of extras that you won’t be offered anywhere else. Board barbecue, water skis, kneeboard, fun tires and a so-called sub-wing with which underwater can be “flown” are the guarantee that everyone will enjoy the holiday. In short, relax.
