Flowers are an essential element in Greece, and the Greeks love flowers. When visiting a Greek family at home, it may very well be possible that they offer you a flower or a nicely smelling sprig of basil (to put behind your ear) as a welcome gift.

Everywhere around the Ionian islands you will find the courtyards of the residents full of old painted flowerpots and tins in which they grow flowers and spices. The flowery plants which you will see most are bougainvillea, jasmine, honeysuckle, hibiscus, and a big variety of orchids.
Whilst walking through the fields in Spring, you will find wild poppies, daisies, anemones and many, many gorse bushes. These gorse bushes give flowers until June. When wandering about the mountains in April or May, you will spot lots of different wild orchids, crocuses, and many types of thistles. And everywhere on the island you will smell the wild spices all year around, like sage, thyme, oregano, rosemary and marjoram. The flowers and in particular the blooming thyme, attract a countless amount of bees, which ensures that there is a lot of honey available on the Ionian islands.

The Ionian islands also possess a large quantity of cypresses which grow to an immense hight. Besides cypresses there are may planes, wild fig trees, eucalyptus trees, acacias, palm- and Judas trees. Carob- and pine trees you will find to a lesser extend. Everywhere you will see fruit trees, such as apple-, pear-, pineapple-, lemon-, mandarin-, peach-, apricot-, cherry-, banana- and fig trees.

Every year huge swarms of swallows pass by the Ionian islands. Especially in the twilight during summer time, they make such noise, you can hardly speak. Bird watchers will enjoy this area very much as they can spot many different kinds of birds, like nightingales, falcons, bee eaters, field larks, but also large groups of wild ducks fly over, and birds like cormorants, aigrettes and pelicans can be observed.
